Why does my RCCB keep tripping?
An RCCB trips when current leaks to earth, usually 30mA or more on a home circuit. The leak is almost always one of four things: water in an outdoor light or socket, an appliance with a failing heating element, damaged cable insulation, or an RCCB worn out after 10–15 years.
If an MCB trips instead, that one circuit is overloaded or shorted. A kettle, air fryer and microwave on the same kitchen circuit is the most common cause we see.
Why does it only trip when it rains?
Water gets into porch lights, garden lights, outdoor sockets and the taped cable joints behind them. It is our most common call between October and January, especially in older terraces with outdoor fittings that have no proper IP rating.
The fix is usually an IP65 fitting, a sealed junction box and a separate breaker for the outdoor circuit. Then a wet garden light switches off the garden, not the fridge.
Can I just reset it and carry on?
Resetting once is fine. If it trips again within minutes or days, there is a leak somewhere. Never tape it up or bypass it, and do not swap a 30mA unit for a 100mA one to stop the nuisance. Malaysian rules require 30mA protection on socket circuits because it stops a shock from becoming fatal.
