Do I need a 10mA RCCB for my water heater?
Yes. Malaysian rules require 10mA RCD protection for water heaters and other wet locations. Many heaters fitted before this became standard rely only on the house's 30mA or 100mA RCCB, which is not enough in a wet bathroom.
Many instant heaters have a small built-in ELCB. We still fit a 10mA RCCB in the DB box, so your safety does not depend on a part inside a hot, humid bathroom. Adding one to an existing point costs RM250 to RM450.
Instant or storage water heater: which should I choose?
Instant heaters, typically 3.3–3.6kW, heat water as it flows and suit a single shower. Storage heaters hold 20 to 50 litres or more and can feed a shower and basin together, or a rain shower that needs more flow.
Storage heaters need a solid wall, pressure-rated pipework and a safety valve. We handle the electrical side and mounting, and quote pipework after seeing the bathroom. For like-for-like swaps, a WhatsApp photo usually lets us quote.
Can I plug a water heater into a normal socket?
No. A water heater needs its own circuit from the DB box, a 20A double-pole switch outside the shower area and a 10mA RCCB. A 13A socket in a bathroom is unsafe and shares load with other appliances. We find this often in older condos and rented units.
