Can a ceiling fan be installed on a plaster ceiling?
Yes, but never hung from the plaster alone. We fix the bracket to the concrete slab or a structural member above, using a downrod where needed. In older terraces the original hook is often still in the slab and only needs checking for rust and movement.
In condos with a false ceiling, we cut a small opening, fix to the slab and bring the downrod through. The canopy covers the opening, so most installs need no ceiling repair.
Should I choose a DC or AC ceiling fan?
DC fans use around 30–35W at full speed against 70–80W for an AC fan. They are quieter, usually come with a remote and cost more to buy. Most people choose DC for the silent motor rather than the electricity saving.
AC fans are simpler, cheaper to repair and work with a wall regulator. Both install the same way at the same price. When replacing an AC fan with a DC one, we bypass or swap the old regulator as part of the job.
How high should a ceiling fan be?
Blades should be at least 2.3 metres above the floor, and ideally 25–30cm below the ceiling for good airflow. Ceilings above 3.5 metres need an extension rod. For blade size, 42 to 48 inches suits most bedrooms and 52 to 56 inches a living room.
