What causes a socket to spark or burn?

A small spark when you plug in a heavy appliance can be normal. A spark that leaves a mark is not. The usual cause is a loose terminal that heats up over months until the plastic around it melts.

Other causes are cheap multi-plug adaptors running a heater and kettle together, worn sockets that no longer grip the plug, and rats chewing cable in older terraces with open roof spaces.

Is a burnt socket dangerous if it still works?

Yes. Scorching means a connection runs hot every time it is used, and the heat damage usually runs a few centimetres along the cable. Changing only the faceplate leaves that brittle cable in place, so we cut back to clean copper and remake the joint.

We also check the other sockets on the same circuit. One burnt socket often means the circuit has been overloaded for a long time.

What should I do if a socket is sparking right now?

Switch off that socket's MCB, or the main switch if you are not sure which breaker it is. Do not pull the plug out while it is sparking or with wet hands. Once the power is off, unplug the appliance, take a photo and send it to us on WhatsApp. If there is smoke or fire, call 999.
