Signs you need rccb & elcb replacement
- Nothing happens when you press the test button
- The RCCB trips at random even with every circuit switched off
- It will not reset, or feels loose when you push it up
- Your board has an old ELCB with a separate earth wire terminal
- The unit is 10–15 years old and has never been tested
- There is no 10mA RCCB protecting the water heater

What is the difference between an RCCB and an ELCB?
In Malaysia people use both names for the switch with a 'T' test button. Strictly, an ELCB is the older voltage-operated type found in many pre-1990s houses. It relies on a good earth and can fail to trip. An RCCB measures leakage current directly and is far more reliable.
If your board still has a true ELCB, replace it with an RCCB. It costs RM250 to RM450 fitted and is one of the cheapest safety upgrades for an older house.
Should I use a 10mA, 30mA or 100mA RCCB?
It depends on the circuit. Malaysian wiring rules require 10mA or less for water heaters and wet areas, and 30mA or less for socket circuits and anything handheld. 100mA is used for general protection of the whole installation.
Never replace a tripping 30mA RCCB with a 100mA one to stop the nuisance. It stops the tripping but removes the shock protection on your sockets. We will not do it, and you should not let anyone else.
How often should an RCCB be tested?
Press the test button once a month. It should trip instantly. If it does not, replace it straight away. A full test with an RCD meter, which measures trip time and current, is worth doing every few years and is part of our electrical safety inspection.
