What IP rating do outdoor lights need?
IP65 is the minimum for anything exposed to rain, including porch lights under a short roof. In-ground uplights and fittings where water can pool need IP67. Many 'outdoor' lights sold online are only IP44, which is fine under a deep patio but not on a gate pillar.
Most rain tripping comes from water entering through the cable entry or a taped joint, not the light itself. We use proper cable glands, make joints inside sealed junction boxes and mount fittings so water runs off.
Why do my outdoor lights trip the power when it rains?
Water reaches a live connection and leaks current to earth, so the 30mA RCCB trips. The usual culprits are cracked covers, taped cable joints and conduits that channel water into the back box. These calls spike during the October to January storms.
We fix the cause and put the outdoor lights on their own breaker, so a wet fitting only switches off the garden. Note which lights were on when it tripped; that often points straight to the fault.
Should I use solar garden lights instead?
Solar lights are fine for marking a path, but most are too dim for a driveway or security, and their batteries fade after a year or two in our heat. For gate, porch and security lighting, wired LED fittings are brighter and last for years.
