Does Malaysia really need surge protection?
Malaysia has one of the highest lightning rates in the world, and the Klang Valley gets afternoon storms on many days, especially in April to May and October to November. Lightning does not need to hit your house. A strike on a nearby line or tree can send a surge into every socket.
Inverter aircond PCBs, TVs, routers, autogate controllers and fridge boards suffer most. Replacing one inverter aircond board can cost more than the SPD that would have protected it.
What does an SPD protect against, and what not?
A Type 2 SPD diverts surges coming in through the power supply to earth before they reach your sockets. It handles indirect lightning and grid switching surges. It will not stop a direct strike on your roof, and it cannot work if your earthing is poor.
For sensitive equipment, add a plug-in surge protector at the socket as a second layer. Unplugging the TV and router during a heavy storm is still the cheapest protection.
How long does an SPD last?
Every surge wears it a little. Most units have a window that shows green when healthy and red when the module needs replacing, so check it after each storm season. On most models the new module plugs into the same base, which costs less than the first installation.
