Is it my wiring or a TNB problem?
Check the neighbours first. If their houses and the street lights are also off, it is a supply outage and only TNB can fix it. Call TNB Careline on 15454 or check the myTNB app. Private electricians are not allowed to work on TNB's meter or service cable.
If the neighbours have power and your main switch and RCCB are up, the fault is in your own installation. The usual culprits are a burnt connection at the main switch, a failed MCB or a loose neutral at the DB box.
Why has only half my house lost power?
Usually one breaker or one cable has failed. In double-storey terraces, upstairs and downstairs often run on separate circuits, so one burnt MCB terminal can black out a floor. Houses on 3-phase supply can lose one phase, which kills about a third of the circuits.
Dim lights and flickering point to a loose neutral. Treat it as urgent, because it can push the wrong voltage onto some circuits and damage TVs, routers and fridges. Switch off the main switch and book a same-day visit.
What should I check before calling an electrician?
Look at the DB box. If the main switch or RCCB is down, push it up once. If it stays up, look for an MCB in the down or middle position and reset it. If nothing has tripped and there is still no power, switch off the main switch and call us. Do not open the DB box cover or the meter panel.
